Call about your symptoms

Tell us what is happening.

Pain that persists

Explain when the pain started, what triggers it and whether it is disturbing sleep or daily activities.

Swelling or signs of infection

Tell the clinic about swelling, fever, a bad taste or feeling unwell so the urgency can be assessed.

A damaged tooth or restoration

Describe a broken tooth, lost filling or crown and any injury. A telephone conversation helps clarify the next step; it cannot diagnose the cause.

The purpose of a visit

An assessment before a treatment decision.

Identify the cause

Pain may arise from decay, infection, a damaged tooth or another problem. Symptoms alone cannot establish which treatment is needed.

Discuss the immediate need

An examination, and imaging if indicated, helps determine the appropriate care or whether a referral is needed.

Understand the next steps

The findings may lead to a repair, further treatment planning or another course of care. Treatment and timing depend on the assessment.

When to go straight to hospital

Some symptoms need emergency care.

Go to the nearest hospital emergency department immediately if swelling is affecting your breathing, swallowing or speech, or extends around your eye or into your neck. Do not wait for a clinic callback or WhatsApp response.

Uncontrolled bleeding or serious injury also needs urgent professional attention. If you cannot reach a dental clinic and symptoms are severe or getting worse, seek urgent care rather than waiting for routine opening hours.

While arranging care

Keep the clinic informed.

Have your medication list, allergies and relevant medical conditions ready when you call. Tell the clinic if symptoms change. A routine appointment request is not a substitute for urgent assessment.

A pharmacist can advise whether an over-the-counter pain medicine is appropriate for you. Follow the medicine instructions and disclose your health conditions and medicines. Pain relief does not treat the underlying dental cause.

Common questions

Before you wait for an appointment.

Can I wait for an online reply if swelling is getting worse?

Call for urgent assessment. If swelling affects breathing, swallowing or speech, or reaches the eye or neck, go straight to a hospital emergency department.

Does toothache mean I need root canal treatment?

Several problems can cause dental pain. Examination is needed before recommending a filling, root canal treatment, extraction or another approach.

Can I get a same-day appointment?

Call us — we prioritise patients in pain wherever the schedule allows. Sunday appointments can be arranged by phone.

What should I say when I call?

Describe the location and duration of pain, any swelling or injury, fever or feeling unwell, and relevant medicines or health conditions.

What if the pain settles?

Symptoms settling does not always mean the cause has resolved. Arrange a dental assessment, particularly if symptoms persist or recur.
