Teeth shifting? Start with an assessment.

Noticed teeth moving after braces or aligners, or a retainer that feels different? Arrange an orthodontic consultation to understand what has changed and discuss appropriate next steps.

A consultation to understand your options. A decision at your pace.

Why review a retainer concern

A plan for the period after treatment.

Understand the change

An examination can help distinguish tooth movement, an appliance problem or another dental concern.

Review your retention routine

Discuss the retainer type, fit and cleaning, and whether your instructions need to be reviewed.

Consider appropriate options

If teeth have moved, explore the implications of monitoring, a retainer review or further orthodontic assessment.

What brings you here?

Small changes are worth discussing.

A lost or damaged retainer

Contact Dr. Shreya promptly rather than waiting for your next routine review.

A fixed wire feels loose

A bonded retainer needs checking if a section loosens or breaks. Keep cleaning carefully around it.

Teeth look different again

Tell Dr. Shreya about the changes and your previous treatment. Earlier records and the existing retainer can be useful.

Your consultation

Review the teeth, bite and appliance.

Bring your retainers and any previous orthodontic records you have. Explain when you first noticed a change and how you have been wearing the retainer. An examination considers the teeth and gums, how they meet and the appliance itself.

Retention maintains tooth positions; it is different from an active plan to move teeth. If movement has occurred, the right next step depends on its extent, your bite and oral health. A new retainer or more orthodontic treatment should not be assumed to be necessary or suitable before assessment.

Looking after your retainer

Follow the instructions for your appliance.

Use your individual wear plan

Retainer schedules differ. Follow your prescribed instructions and contact the clinic if you are unsure what applies.

Protect and clean it

Store a removable retainer safely when it is out. Use cleaning instructions suited to its material; keep teeth and any fixed wire clean.

Arrange a fit review

If a retainer no longer seats properly, is damaged or causes persistent pain, seek advice rather than forcing it or altering it yourself.

Your questions

Understanding retention and relapse.

Why can teeth move after orthodontic treatment?

Teeth can move back towards earlier positions and can also change with age. This is why ongoing retention is commonly advised after braces or aligners.

Does a fixed retainer need attention?

Yes. It requires careful cleaning and checking for looseness or damage. A fixed appliance does not remove the need for follow-up.

Will a retainer straighten teeth that have moved?

Retainers are generally intended to maintain positions. Do not assume an old appliance will safely correct movement. An assessment is needed before deciding what to do.

Will I need braces or aligners again?

Dr. Shreya will assess whether retreatment is needed and which option suits you, considering the movement, your bite and oral health.

How long should I keep wearing retainers?

Long-term retention is commonly recommended. Dr. Shreya should explain the schedule and reviews appropriate to your appliance and situation.

Are there limitations or risks?

Retainers can wear, break or become loose, and teeth may still move. Inadequate cleaning can contribute to gum problems. Further active orthodontic treatment has its own risks, which need an individual discussion.
